Of the many things we could say about this bowl, the first thing that comes to mind is - wow! Amazing rainbow iridescent surface that can only be obtained by being about 1000 years old. Scholars believe that these turquoise bowls may have been inspired by Silk Road trade and the famous blue and white pottery from the Chinese Tang Dynasty. The glazing technique seen here, however, became its own radical Nishapur style. Many old collection labels adorn the foot of the bowl, telling the story of its more recent travels in the last hundred years or so. The iridescence shines well under most lighting, but this bowl really stands out under a direct display light.
Size: 8.5" W x 3.5" H
Condition: Overall very good with all original pigments. Stable cracks and repairs throughout which add character and do not detract from the overall form or aesthetic.
Provenance: ex-Arte Primitivo, New York City, New York, USA; ex-private estate of Jack Faxon, New York City, New York, USA. Faxon was a Michigan State Senator from 1971-1985, and creator of the Michigan Council for the Arts. Sold for the benefit of the Smithsonian Institution.
